A strange silhouette eclipsed the moon tonight.
Finally touching ground after floating in on her Umbrella-mode Chaos Driver, Whisper turned around her, immediately worried about hostiles, even if this place was so close to home. Just a train ride away... and she could be with her uncle again. Presumably. The bright starlight casting a blue glow around her, her long shadow walked in front of her as she headed towards the jungle. She needed something to eat... she'd forgotten after defending the last town she visited. She couldn't even remember how much she'd slept. Rubbing her squinting eyes, it seemed like home felt forever away even if she was at the last practical hurdle.
She didn't like Station Square, but it was home as much as anything was. Sometimes she preferred sleeping outdoors, and very briefly, she considered it.
No, it wouldn't do good to keep anyone waiting. A branch cracked behind her and she was quick to shift her Chaos Driver into sniper mode, but it only turned out to be... nothing. The night answered for no one.
Whisper put the weapon back under her arm, drawing her cloak around her shivering form.
"Getting to me." She murmured under her breath.

In the darkness of the canopy eight bright yellow eyes watched the nervous wolf, unblinking, unmoving. What an odd gadget this girl carried with her. And she seemed scared, as if expecting someone to be following her…Perhaps she was searching for it too. The figure slowly crept down the tree, her long coat draping down to shield her from the revealing moonlight. She’d done this so often before, she knew she was practically invisible…practically.

Whisper had a lot of friends and possibly just as many enemies, with the baddies she trounced on a regular basis. Watching her back was the only way she made it this far. A pang of hunger hit her, as well as the sudden wooziness from not having eaten in so long. She might have been watching her back, but other things were tugging at her attention. Was there a fruit tree nearby? A normal person might have thought "Hey, get to the train station, idiot", but she was used to living off the land as well. Maybe... a coconut tree or a pineapple plant? She began rustling the nearest bushes to find one, leaving her back exposed for the time being.

What was she looking for? It wasn’t anywhere around the train station. There didn’t seem to be anyone else around so maybe a direct approach was best…after nullifying any chance of her lashing out. The spindly woman dropped to all fours, darting across the open patch of jungle with surprising speed, closing the distance while the wolf had her back turned. A swift hand reached under her coat and gripped a thick strand of thread with a bulbous end to act as a weight. She twirled it in hand before letting the sticky grapple fly, hoping to quickly land on the girl and begin tying her up. uYNS7dr_

"...!!!" Taken aback immediately, Whisper could only hear it in the nick of time before rearing up with her weapon to block the oncoming fall. She held it just in a position to block, not to fire, so if the spider landed upon her, she'd be knocked back to the ground in a defensive position. "W--Who...?" She managed to sputter out quietly.

Well that didn’t work…Plan B; Be cordial, be honest. She straightened to her feet, wrapping her hands behind her back. Her dark skin looking midnight black in the darkness, only those bright eyes being clearly visible, staring the wolf girl down. “ Soirée, mon cher. Apologies but I am in need of some information and couldn’t risk you running off.”

"Don't got any." At first, she sounded defiant with that little whisper, but Whisper didn't really have much to say. Did this person need to know if this was the Mystic Ruins? That much she could share, but other than that... she didn't know what kind of 'information' she was expected to offer. "Why?"

She couldn’t help but smile. This one sounded like she wanted to be assertive but whispering didn’t denote any true confidence. The spider lady adjusted her gloves as she took a step forward, her voice sounding more authoritative, perhaps in challenge to the wolf’s own. “Not long ago a bright flash lit up zis area. Eye witnesses say somesing fell into ze jungle but noone has yet gone after it…I am curious what it is.”

"Wasn't me." Apparently, that answer was all Whisper had to give. Satisfied that she had nothing else to offer this spider, she started to walk away when her stomach started growling again. Audibly. She groaned, turning back towards her, knowing she was in the middle of nowhere and needed help. "Food around here?"

Well this was getting nowhere fast. Though the mention of food may be something worth pursuing. If she knew more than she was letting on then keeping her close by would be best, if not then an extra pair of hands finding whatever this falling light was wouldn’t go amiss. “Allow me to make you an offer, chéri.” The spider motioned in the direction of the train station. “I will get for you whatever meal you desire and in return you will help me find what I am looking for. How does zis sound to you?”

"... fine."
Was she really in any situation to say no? Besides, running an errand was hardly the worst thing she had to do lately. Even if she was whispering, she wanted to make her intentions loud and clear.
"What are you seeking?" That would get them off the ground, at least. Whisper never presumed there would be payment before she delivered.

This question seemed to perk Sydney up as she bounced on her heels. “I have no idea.” She stated excitedly, “Zat is ze mystery. All I know is zat somesing fell into ze jungle. Nosing more.” Again the spider motioned in the direction of the train station as she began marching after it. “Come. We will discuss ze matter over food.”

"..." A wild goose chase? Very well... Whisper was at the whims of Sydney now. Hoisting her Chaos Driver over her shoulder, she walked at a steady pace with the spider. She was generous for treating her to dinner, so she'd let her talk and they would do something about the ruins one way or the other. Sorry, Dusty... she thought to herself. "Fell?"

“Oui. Zere was a bright light in ze sky and zen a purple comet crashed beyond ze treeline.” Sydney explained as she strolled along. The pale artificial light of the train station straining through the trees to show the pair the way. It was quiet. No passengers waiting and no train screaming into the night…at least not yet.

"Comet..." That could be one of many things. A few sprang to mind, but ultimately they were just petty guesses. An... emerald, maybe? If that's the case, maybe she should stick around for real. Those always ended up in the wrong hands, and she didn't know Sydney well enough yet. "Treasure hunter?" She whispered, wanting to know exactly why Sydney wanted it.

The same questions swirled about the spider’s mind. What could it be? An emerald may seem likely but then why and how did it fall from the sky after making such a bright light? Who else was after it? Was there any danger? What if it wasn’t an emerald? Is this something she could rub in that imbecilic crocodile’s face? Not knowing was exhilarating for her. The thrill of getting to figure out a new puzzle, and now with her own personal Watson. “No, no, mon cher. I am a Private Detective simply looking to unravel zis mystery before anyone else.”

“Detective.” She repeated it quietly. Most of her fears were now put to rest. She was just someone who enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, and Whisper could relate. A wolf was a wolf, no matter how quiet. Finding out what landed here could benefit her too. “Leads?” She asked tentatively.

“Only eye witnesses.” She answered without looking back. The train station drew closer, the murmur of a radio droning on as the ticket attendant lay slumped in their chair half asleep. “A few from ze station saw ze flash. I happened to be on a joining train and heard ze commotion and here I am.” The small coffee shop was still open, rows of candy and chips of various flavors stacked beside a freezer of sandwiches at one end and the other, a few tables gathered near a counter with a cashier and coffee machine stood upon it. A large blackboard hung on the wall displaying several options for pies, hot sandwiches ect. “Take your pick, cheri. Time may move against us if others begin searching before us.”

"Good leads." Others searching for them? Then it really was time to haul out. She picked a sandwich and a drink, even though she was sure she could eat much more. It just wasn't... polite to tap out someone else's bill like that. She hurriedly dug into them whenever they were paid for and polished them off almost instantly. So much for good manners. "Alright." Whisper whispered, feeling her strength come back to her bit by bit. "Where?"

While Whisper saw to herself, the spider considered purchasing a tea but...it wouldn’t be right, not how she liked it. Perhaps this wolf girl would appreciate a proper tea when this was all over as a thank you for her assistance? Something to remember to inquire about. She dug a few rings from a small purse hidden beneath her coat to pay for what Whisper had chosen and set off back towards the jungle, pointing over the hill. “Somewhere beyond zere, I believe? Towards ze old echidna ruins perhaps. We will have to traverse ze more dense part of ze jungle, cheri. I hope you can manage.”

"I can manage." She sounded more confident than her tiny voice gave credit for. One more adventure before going home to the cozy home Dusty has set up? Sure. She glanced over to the jungle and quickly got an idea. "Don't need to. Fly over." She fired up the chaos driver, holding it aloft over her head and turned on the 'float' ability. As long as she could control this, she could easily lift the two of them over the forest and avoid all possible baddies. "Or...?" Unless she had a better idea.

Fascinating. Sydney slowly paced around the hovering wolf and her odd umbrella-like contraption. She had never seen something like this before…and she longed to study things she did not understand. The analytical side to her struggled to be free, to take the device apart and learn how it worked but that would be…rude. Clearing her throat, the spider gave a single nod and extended her hand. “Excellent, mon ami. Zis will save us valuable time. Zough it is not for a lady to speak of her weight, I do hope I am no burden.”

Whisper solemnly held out an arm for her to grab onto. Though she wasn't used to holding people so closely-- even was nervous of that, no less-- this would indeed be faster. She just had to swallow her uncomfortableness and give it a go. "Hang on." She whispered loud enough to hear, pulling her shoulders into her so she could more firmly hold her weight as the two ascended into the air, awaiting directions.

Taking Whisper’s hand, the spider leaned against her with some uncertainty. Being that close to someone was not something she was used to herself. A slight blush crept onto her face as she looked about, taking in the view to distract herself. One of the long spindly legs protruding from Sydney’s back motioned deeper into the forest. “Zat way.” She uttered simply, half of her eyes transfixed by the beauty of the ruins at night. She’d never been able to see them from above and despite how improper this mode of transport may be, it was nice.

The ruins were indeed beautiful. Whisper prided herself on knowing her way around them, finding them peaceful places to relax after engaging with Eggman's forces. One thing this world boasted was a beautiful history, and she was quietly happy to explore them with someone. She flew in the direction that Sydney pointed out, taking her time so as not to drop her. When they arrived near the site, she gently let the two of them down. "Where...?" It seemed Whisper was still at a loss for words.

A tall stone pyramid of echidna origin stood proudly above the dense treeline, coated in silvery moonlight. The sight caused Sydney’s eyes to light up as she smiled. “Near zere. Zat seems ze most likely place. Open, near water for anything to be swept downstream. We can start looking for clues nearby.” Oooh looking for clues was a personal favourite part of investigations. Finding pieces to a puzzle and then the joy of fitting them into place to tell a cohesive story of events. It was satisfying.

She hoped Dusty wouldn't mind her being so late... then again, her lateness was almost part and parcel with her line of work. Fighting off Eggman baddies wherever she went made her schedule as chaotic as the very emerald they were trying to hunt down. "Okay," She whispered in response to Sydney. Where on Gaia could it be? Hooking her weapon under her cloak, she peered out into the darkness, keen eyesight trying to follow the light of a subtle glow.

Bark hated the jungle. It was hot, it was damp in a distinctly unpleasant way, insects buzzed constantly around his ears (a small mercy, he supposed, that his fur was too thick for them to get through for the most part), and the close-growing vegetation was determined to stall his progress with every step. Still. A job was a job: find the purple comet. Bring it in. Get paid. in the interest of keeping himself relatively cool and away from the plants (why they couldn't be small, sparse, and respectably like the lichens of ice fields and tundras was beyond him), Bark had taken to walking through the stream running through the jungle; water, at least, was a welcome feature, and he could tune into the sounds of the current when his partner's rambles got to be too much. He could handle this, and with luck it could be handled before anyone else-- He halted at the sound of a voice ahead. Two, maybe, though one was so soft it was hard to be sure. Great. The polar bear let out a soft, irritated whuff and turned to signal to his friend that he'd heard something. Really, he'd prefer to avoid a confrontation, so if Bean could be convinced to go around they could continue searching without-- Wait. Where did Bean go?

Of course, to Bark, this place was misery, but to someone else, it was a verdant wonderland. So many things to hide in! To climb! To sniff! To taste! Okay, maybe he should not have tried that random fruit, it had tasted a bit the way old socks smelled, but curiosity got the better of him and he had little in the way of self control. Having tossed the Gym Socks Fruit aside, he instead began looking for a suitable vine to go Tarzan-ing on. He had always wanted to try it. He thought he was being clever, testing his weight against a fibrous shoot that had draped itself over a branch. Aha! This would do nicely. He gripped the vine firmly and pushed off with his feet. The idea was to whip past Bark in an impressive display... ...instead, his arc was badly off, and he smacked himself right into the polar bear's back. He slid slowly down and to the water, his head now throbbing and the world pitching. Hitting Bark was like hitting a brick wall wrapped in a fur coat. At least he had left out the Tarzan yell. They still had a chance at stealth. Maybe. But now he was under the water, sullen bubbles rising.

Setting down back on solid earth just outside the ancient pyramid, Sydney scanned the area as best she could. Admittedly her eyesight wasn’t the best. Ironic considering how many eyes she had. Her senses were as sharp as ever though and she felt a tingling of perception from all around. No doubt the various animals, birds ect that call the jungle home. Trying to ignore that pull for her attention at every slight movement, the spider withdrew her walking cane and began sauntering about the glade. “We did not see any crater on our way so nozing obvious to follow to find zis meteor. And ze dense trees hide any potential glow from it.” This was a tricky one. She loved tricky ones. Pacing about on the grass, tapping her cane with her index finger as she tried to think. “Hmm…our best bet may be to start downriver and work our way up.”
