"I'll keep watch." Less concerned with the treasure and more concerned with the dangers that could surround them, Whisper was more than capable of dealing with any threats. She was a hardened soldier and this place had once been the site of a lot of struggle. Content with letting Sydney be the brains of the operation, Whisper pulled her mask back over her face and let her keen ears do some sensing. "... Are you sure we're the only ones here?" She asked, quietly. "It seems..." Suspicious. That something so valuable would only attract their eyes. Nonetheless, she hadn't seen anything follow them... better hurry it up.

The bear let out a huff of surprise as Bean struck him, but didn't falter. Instead, he straightened up and took a deep breath. Patience, Bark. Patience. He turned, reaching down to fish Bean out by the scruff and haul the dripping woodpecker up to eye level, his other hand coming up in front of his face for the very best shushing gesture boxing gloves could manage. That done, Bark held eye contact a long moment to emphasize the point before gently setting Bean on shore and turning his attention back to the strangers. Of course they wanted to try the stream. That meant he had to give up his nice, cool path. Are you sure we're the only ones here?Wonderful. Fantastic. Bark was confident in his ability to take on whoever else was out here, but it ran the risk of attracting more people to their search. It also ran the risk of Bean blowing up the ruins and whatever they were after. He turned to his partner and made the 'shush' gesture again and then - hoping that idea stuck in Bean's sievelike mind - Bark moved into the jungle, stepping carefully to make as little noise as possible.

Dripping indeed. Bean was soaked to the bone from his little dip in the river. He curled his legs up as he was plucked, and gave his partner a somewhat disappointed look when Bark motioned for silence. It was not golden! It was a boring pain! Still, he seemed to understand (for the moment) and once put down, he dropped to all fours and shook from beak to tail, possibly spraying water all over the polar bear. He then plopped on his rump and pulled off his boots, dumping water out of them and into the grass before putting them back on. He would need to fully dry everything later, but for now, he was ready to move again. He followed after his much larger partner in crime, making greatly exaggerated 'sneaking' movements like something out of a cartoon.

“…unlikely.” Sydney whispered, finishing the wolf’s thought. Drumming her fingers along the top of her cane, the spider allowed herself to feel the smallest movements around her. Typically she had to suppress this due to just how noisy the city was, it was painful to open herself up and be so receptive but out here in nature it felt quite freeing. She could feel the wind, the small scuttling bugs on the nearby temple wall. She could hear Whisper’s heartbeat. But could she feel anyone else in the area? Her senses were acute but her range was limited. vh0pygRX

There was nothing Whisper could sense around them, but she watched the spider with an intense curiosity. She didn't have anything like that to show off, her Chaos Driver only useful for combat and floating. Whatever the case, Sydney was not here as an unprepared tourist but as a dedicated explorer. Plus, if anyone did show up, Whisper didn't feel like she couldn't take it. She took a few steps forward, silently, towards where the light had headed.

All right. They didn't seem to... entirely realize he and Bean were there. Good. Now if Bean would just stay shushed, they might get in and out with no trouble. The woodpecker seemed to think of the sneaking as a game, so as long as he didn't get bored of it they'd be fine. Bark moved forward carefully, and after a few steps shortened his strides to allow Bean to place his steps in Bark's footprints. That might amuse him. Go toward the light, Bark thought wryly, and go he did.

If he noticed the conversation nearby, he showed no signs of interest in it for the moment. He was bored...and that was never a good thing with Bean. Bean at least quickly picked up on the 'game' that Bark was creating, and he plunked one foot in after the other, making great, big strides. His boots were still wet, however, and with each swift downwards step into the bear's footprints, there was a distinct squelching sound that, well, the woodpecker did not seem to notice, but that others certainly might.

Alas all the rustling of wind and insects, frogs and birds. It was too much for the spider to discern just yet. But Whisper had made a good point, it was very likely given how obvious the shooting star had been, that others were scouring for it. So she’d do what she did best and hunt. “Mon coeur. Be a dear and start looking. Start downriver as we discussed. I will be nearby, you have my word. I want to be certain we have no interruptions.” Sydney had already begun spinning strands of webbing, drawing them from beneath her coat yet she waited for the wolf to give some confirmation. She didn’t like leaving her alone and seeming to abandon her and if Whisper wasn’t comfortable with this…she’d think of something else.

Whisper nodded, tentatively. What had she gotten herself into? The noises in the background, too, were starting to sound suspiciously muddy. The last thing she wanted to do was use her Chaos Driver on something as innocuous as an emerald hunt. She obeyed Sydney's orders, going down the river and searching for a glowing light. The Chaos Driver provided ample glow to see through the dark, and as much as she wanted to stay by Sydney to protect her, securing something that might be valuable and dangerous was a priority too.

Bark twitched slightly at each squelch - but as no one seemed to be investigating it as yet, he just rolled his eyes. Maybe he could claim that Bean was feral and he was his caretaker. No - that was mean. Bean was doing his best as much as his disorganized thoughts would allow; it was hardly the woodpecker's fault they were out on a mission that was decidedly not tailored to their talents. They'd make the most of it. They always did. And if he kept making a game of it, they might just pull this off. He turned slightly to Bean, signing - a sort of shorthand they'd developed between them to communicate without Bark having to removes his boxing glove. "I spy with my little eye, something... dark." With luck, Bean would then use his turn to spy something 'light' - and in the search, keep them on the trail.

Bean was successfully distracted with the game, for the moment. He tugged Bark's pantsleg now and then to sign back the things he was guessing, fingers moving deftly in the dim jungle light. He was quite fluent, and could read the shorthand well. They had been doing this for some time, after all, ever since... Well. There was so much to see here. Logs, logs that looked like crocodiles, logs that may have actually been crocodiles. There were radiant flowers and draping vines, leaves shaped like hearts and stars, and the occasional creature even. It was distracting to the point of overwhelming, really. But it did give him plenty of fodder for the game.

As the pair of mercs plodded along playing their little game and Whisper ventured deeper into the jungle, Sydney had gathered a large amount of her own webbing and found the sturdiest looking tree she could find. ‘This should do nicely.’ She thought with a nod before scaling the trunk. She wanted to hum. She liked singing while she worked but alas that would ruin the point of her trying to be stealthy. Oh well. She strung a few strands about the tree, making sure they were secure, the natural glue holding the white strands in place. Perfect. Back down the tree, she dashed to another tree a few metres away and began the process again. Pulling the webbing taught as the net was complete, almost invisible save for when the moonlight caught it. With any luck this would ensnare anyone following the poor wolf girl.

"Thanks." It was scarcely above a whisper, but then again, where else did Whisper get her name? She watched in fascination as Sydney worked, wondering just how far this would take them if they were really being followed. True, it was hard to see the web in the moonlight... oh well, nothing to do now but press forward. She could tell they were close to something-- the ruins? Maybe.

Darn - he'd been hoping the 'dark' cue would get Bean looking for a 'light' to spy. Ah well... he could work with this, and it was a reason for Bean to scour the landscape as intensely as Bark himself was doing. Patience. Patience. Get there before the other people in the jungle, without attracting attention, get out. Maybe buy Bean a milkshake for good behavior - he was being extremely cooperative and as on-task as Bark could ever hope. The bear squinted into the jungle and perked up slightly at the first signs of the ruins, red eyes roving appreciatively over the surviving mosaics. Maybe he'd learn to mosaic, once they had the funds to move out of the Armada's reach and keep Bean safe. It was a nice thought. He gave Bean a little smile, and signed. "I spy something blue." Just a little longer.
