The sunlight is almost too much on the warm summer day she finds out her family is dead.
Someone protects her the moment she hears the news. An older rabbit kneels by her in GUN HQ and asks her how she's doing. Between tears, she asks when she'll be able to see Mommy and Daddy. He breaks it to her gently that they won't be coming home for a long, long time. His honesty is appreciated later in life, even if it doesn't comfort her right then and there. Whisper lost everything, but so did several people in GUN HQ. People were huddled and rubbing each other's backs, but Dusty only pays attention to this little orphan. Most people were evacuated, but her parents were a few moments short of heeding the call.
She stays at GUN for several weeks as her possessions are moved there and they talk about who was responsible. Eggman... Eggman seems to be mentioned more often than not. The broadcasts of terror as the moon explodes ices her blood as she gazes singularly on the face that threatens everyone with terror. Whisper is convinced from the moment she sees him that there's nothing that will deter her from stopping him.
Even when heroes are declared and the war is won, Whisper doesn't get her family back and thus her vengeance stays hidden in her chest like a second heart, thrumming with a powerful hatred she keeps hidden from the man that would adopt her. She didn't want to go into the foster system, and he had a habit of taking care of children-- a perfect match. But even as she unpacks her room, she's still thinking about who's going to stop him the next time.
The moon is now a permanent arc.
Whisper can no longer stand to look at it.

Push-ups, sit-ups, tinkering with her Chaos Driver. It's all motivated by one thing; putting Eggman down. She can now lift Dusty over her head, much to his surprise when she lifts him in a hug. She hasn't been raised without love for the rest of her teenage years and she's grateful, but he's never been able to convince her to live the life of a normal girl. She wants to help others, and she leaves at seventeen to do so.
She defends others, turns the tides of battle like she's a natural. Her parents were skilled military officers, and it seems like it runs in the family. It helps to help others, but it never quite satisfies her. There's a difference between helping the cause and preventing the disasters in the first place. And each time she kneels down and has to help another child find a lost parent makes her question what she's really doing here, and how close she really is to her goal.

It all starts with adding him to her friend's list.
At first, he seems all talk. Anyone can be anything online, and through conversations, she doesn't quite get to learn enough about him but she does forge a friendship that could only come from the most polar of opposites. She's surprised to know it, but he does have contacts and when they do meet, she feels intimidation run down her spine-- he's the real deal, an opposing force to the thing she wants to destroy. And he's her only friend.
There's something Dusty doesn't know about her, and that's that under the kind, quiet guise is a vengeance burning brighter than a supernova. The kind that can't be subdued or mitigated with meditation or therapy. Just a clear, unyielding hatred.
In that sense, she and Infinite are not so different.
A place that calls itself the Dark Legion should have been a warning, but the world hasn't taken Whisper seriously enough. Eggman has his own island, he interviews in posh magazines that he just doesn't trust a government that killed his little cousin. Playing sympathy on a tragedy that barely affected him, the lowest of the low. That's why her arm is being tape-measured for size for when a new one is built.
"I must admit, my recruits aren't usually so... willing."
Whisper doesn't meet Finitevus's eyes as he sizes her up for parts and improvements, like a car on display. She glances toward the masked jackal in the room before turning her eyes downward.
"Not enough people want to see Eggman fall."
"Trust me, a lot of people get quite a bit of pleasure seeing Humpty-Dumpty have a great fall. Then again, not as many are so... dedicated." The good doctor stares into her eyes, turning her head to face him. "Where does the conviction lie?"
"When he robbed me of everything."
"Everything? Spoiled... you think you've been robbed of everything. If you'd been robbed of everything you'd be here kneeling and begging for my help."
But Fini wasn't about to tell her her poor choices were what brought her here today instead of true desperation; the lie she told herself suited his needs just perfectly.
"Now then... some might feel squeamish about this, but I want something of yours to prove your conviction. And the egg will tumble, of course."
"...?"
"Your heart."
"..."
"Don't worry... I won't set it with a self destruct button. If that's how I got rid of people who disappoint me, I'd rob myself of the opportunity to be more creative. Snipers shoot according to the beat of their hearts, don't you? I want to streamline the process. That, and I have a real knack for open-heart surgery and a substitute I've built has been aching to be used."
"... do what you want."
"Louder."
"Fine."
The tape measure snapped shut. "Oh, we're going to have fun, Whisper. If you would show her where she's staying...?"
Infinite waved her over, and the two began walking down the hall.
Erasing the scientific scribble on a whiteboard, he began to draw plans for his next surgery. "I do enjoy a good downwards spiral."
