Name:
CPO Kim Tae Hyun
Nicknames:
Most commonly goes by his surname Kim, but may be called 'Tae’ by close friends.
Species:
Spotted seal (Phoca largha)
Gender:
Male
Age:
22
Alignment:
Lawful good
Height:
3’10”. Like most of his species Kim is relatively small for a pinniped, though still slightly above average for thropes in general.
Residence:
Soleanna City
World of Origin:
Terra
Occupation:
Soleanna Royal Navy - Coastal Patrol
Personality:
Low-key by nature, Kim exudes a near-preternatural calm. Levelheaded and genteel, his well-ordered demeanor and desire to keep things running as smoothly as possible make for a dedicated and reliable officer while his naturally polite comportment lend him a strong air of respectability. All of this courtesy does conceal a sharp, sly sense of humor with a broad sarcastic streak, and Kim derives particular amusement from allowing someone to believe he's as straight-laced as he initially appears only to drop a joke at the best moment to get the best reaction from his victim. Though formal by default, he is more easy-going than he first appears and sensitive to how others wish to be treated; though unlikely to drop polite language he does strive toward preferred forms of address (for instance, his instinct would be to address Blaze as befitting her station, but he’d only need to be asked to drop it once - reserving the titles for when he feels it’s important to signify he’s deferring to her authority.) He does have a tendency to become a bit too submerged in either hobby or duty, to the point he may forget to sleep.
Kim’s calm is rarely rattled, and even his more negative emotions reflect this: if he dislikes someone he is likely to turn cold and humorless, dropping into his more sarcastic side only if trying to needle the object of his disdain, and he shows an icy, slow temper that is slow to rise and slow to subside - even enraged he maintains a veneer of calm, a trait that can prove more dangerous than any explosive temper under the right circumstances and making any retaliation more well-aimed and calculated than one might expect. While his deliberate nature can make him slow to act, overall everything he does is well-reasoned and thought out… for better or for worse.
Strengths:
Physical: As might be expected, Kim is a superb swimmer - fast, nimble, and capable of diving over a thousand feet deep with no ill effects from pressure or temperature changes. His eyes are sensitive enough to see in near-total darkness, his ears can pick up and pinpoint sound in a wide range of frequencies, and his whiskers can detect even tiny changes in air and water currents as well as allowing him to navigate even when it's too dark to see. He is also a highly skilled sharpshooter proficient with both rifles and pistols, and has close combat training (though it’s far from a preferred method). He possesses incredible crushing and piercing bite force - not on the level of a hyena or shark, but strong enough to crunch through mollusks (though again, something he’d simply rather not do).
Mental: Calm and ordered by nature, very little can ruffle Kim’s fur. Focused and driven, he is able to zero in on a given goal and does not easily become distracted. Because of his structured habits Kim has a keen memory for dates and events, easily recalling when and where something occurred and the circumstances surrounding various events, and his keen memory is a strong aid in his military training and patrols.
Other: Kim is cryokinetic - however, due to the status of indoles on Terra his ability is repressed and underdeveloped. Kim is able to keep himself cool to a degree, and able to spotfreeze locks and other small mechanics, but while he could potentially learn more powerful techniques with proper encouragement and training at present he is simply too suppressed to accomplish much unless driven by adrenaline.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Adapted for the open ocean, Kim simply isn't nearly as effective on land; though better suited to dry land than fish or cetacean thropes, and trained to operate efficiently in a pinch, he is relatively slow and clumsy out of water and his thick, well-insulated pelt also leaves him vulnerable to overheating. His sensitive whiskers are also an exploitable weak point, increasing his distaste for close combat, and bright lights can hurt his depth-adapted eyes, leading to headaches or even temporary blindness if he’s surprised.
Mental: A creature of structure, Kim simply doesn’t do well if there’s no obvious goal. Time on his hands with nothing to do doesn’t sit well with him, and he’s just as likely to freeze up and not get anything done at all. Despite his preference for cooler weather, the change from summer to fall can leave him nervous as well: he’s been taught to avoid disclosing his ability, after all, and as a younger seal he sometimes did drop the temperature in a room when agitated, so naturally falling temperatures can leave him paranoid about how well controlled he really is. Kim is also capable of powerful grudges - while he may forgive, he will never, ever forget, and an early wrong can color his perception for life.
Emerald Abilities:
Sol Emeralds increase Kim’s ability to reflect a potential under training; however, since he is trained only for spot effects and repression, the ability becomes more difficult to control at all - slightly unwieldy with one Emerald, borderline dangerous with two, and outright hazardous with any more. Kim should not be permitted to use Emeralds unless he receives training lest he become a danger to himself and others.
History:
A native of the tiny island nation of Hansilla, Kim is the son and grandson of S.W.O.R.D. agents; as such, his early childhood was spent alternating between life with his grandmother and spending time with his parents when they were off assignment, hearing tales of the locales they were sent to and reading stories of the world off the island. Hearing of his parent's travels was a delight to the pup, and the world outside seemed open and endlessly fascinating.
This all changed when Kim was seven years old, and his ability as an ice-wielding indole came to the surface as a defense against the heat of a particularly brutal summer. The mistrust of indoles on Terra left his parents deeply concerned, and they turned their attention away from duties abroad to station themselves close to home and dedicate themselves to protecting their son. To their minds, the best way to do this was to suppress the ability - and so Kim was carefully trained to keep himself under wraps, developing the calm, imperturbable personality that would last into adulthood. It was a success: Kim went from inadvertently dropping ambient temperatures when agitated to a complete control over himself and his abilities, from forming icy patterns on windows to just barely letting his power come to the surface to cool himself in hot temperatures. A part of him wondered, and still wonders, what he might really be able to do given free reign - but he kept control for the sake of his family's peace of mind. When he was twelve, his ability was deemed fully under control and his parents returned to active duty, ultimately being permanently in Soleanna City. His interest in the world at large returned, and Kim took to the move excitedly... though in the back of his mind he couldn't help wondering if his parents had accepted the assignment to move the family away from people who knew his secret.
Still, Kim loved his new home: Soleanna was beautiful and exciting, reawakening his love of the world at large, and he was never far from the sea; the extensive canals were a point of fascination, and the young seal spent hours exploring the city and learning its secrets. Aside from his love of the city itself, Kim swiftly grew to admire its rulers: the dedication of the royal cats inspired a dedication in him, and as he grew to adulthood Kim found his loyalties lay not with the S.W.O.R.D. organization of his forebears but with Soleanna itself. With this in mind he chose to dedicate himself to his adopted homeland through the royal navy - a position that put his loyalties on display and allowed him to pursue a career without any chance of nepotism due to his lineage - and Kim now takes particular pride in patrolling the kingdom's waters to keep pirates and other dangers from reaching his beloved city.
Likes:
Seafood (particularly shellfish), icy or snowy weather, reading, translating texts from Hansillan, sport shooting, long-distance swimming
Dislikes:
Bright lights, hot weather, low humidity, being idle, lacking a plan
Appearance:
A thrope of slightly above average height, Kim has a streamlined build befitting a powerful swimmer. Hi fur is thick, plush, and primarily white with gray-blue on his back and the top and back of his head; he has pale blue spots on his limbs, cheeks, and tail and slightly darker blue spotting on his back. He has gray-blue brow spots and prominent whiskers on his muzzle and brows; his eyes are dark blue, and his hands and feet are broad and webbed. Both on and off duty Kim tends to prefer form-fitting clothing with belt pouches for carrying objects; he generally eschews shoes and gloves as they would inhibit swimming, though he may don them for formal occasions.
Other Info:
Speaks with a slight Hansillan (Korean) accent.
When on patrol, Kim carries an air rifle for shooting both above and below the water, loaded with metal darts; off patrol, he carries a similar pistol for use in emergencies.
Kim has a fondness for snowflake motifs, but being instructed to keep his abilities under wraps for so long has caused him to hide this liking as well.
He's not above just biting through mollusk shells to eat them when he finds them while swimming... but he'd be mortified if anyone caught him in the act.
He holds Blaze in extremely high regard for her dedication to her people and her control of her powerful flames.
