Name:
Benjamin Bean
Nicknames:
Bean the Dynamite
Species:
Woodpecker.
Gender:
Male
Age:
23
Alignment:
Chaotic Neutral
Height:
3'0
Residence:
Nomadic, as a mercenary, he goes where the work is.
World of Origin:
Gaia
Occupation:
Freelance mercenary
Personality:
Erratic, eccentric, and more than a touch off-kilter, Bean often comes off as mad. He has little regard for personal space or social convention and can be loud and random. He does not show loyalty to any particular cause, but can become fiercely loyal to specific people if they have earned his trust and respect. His apparent madness can come and go (more come and less go, though) and he does suffer from the occasional stretch of sanity. He can become morose more often than not during these times, perhaps mourning the person who he could have once been. However, he is apparently aware of his own nature, and he is not above pretending to be a bit crazier than he actually is in order to set an enemy off guard or just to annoy someone he doesn't like. His friend and working partner Bark is the only force that can curb him when he's getting too extreme.
Strengths:
Bean has the ability to create explosives and detonate existing ones by will alone. He can also sense hidden explosives or ammunition, so long as there is some kind of explosive factor involved. (So he could not sense a musketball because it is just a static object, but contemporary ammunition would not be a problem because a bullet contains parts that will detonate.) He has been shown to be quite shrewd and a good strategist in his moments of clarity. If he can be convinced to focus, he is absolutely tenacious. Knows how to do some fairly complex juggling and sleight of hand.
Weaknesses:
Bean is easily distracted or redirected. He is sometimes difficult to get important information back out of because of this lack of focus. He is also susceptible to bribes. His small size makes intimidation difficult. Despite being a bird, he does not seem to be able to fly. He can be made covetous or jealous.
Emerald Abilities:
None known.
History:
Bean was born to a strict military family and was expected to follow in his father's footsteps in the Battle Bird Armada, something that at first, he made every attempt at. He always had a bizarre sense of humor, but squelched it beneath discipline and polite upbringing. The only person he could really be 'himself' around was Bark the Polar Bear, a mercenary in local employ. The two became close despite their very different personalities.
On showing a specific talent for generating and detonating explosives, he was taken to a questionable facility to learn to control it. There, he was subjected to tests and trials, many of which were inhumane. Somewhere along the way, he almost completely broke and somewhat lost his mind.
One day, while being moved from one building to another, Bean took his chance and detonated the ammunition the guards were carrying, as well as anything else in range. This caused enough of a distraction for him to break away, though he remained trapped within the fences until the commotion drew in Bark. With Bark's help, he escaped to the world at large and now makes his way at Bark's side as a freelance mercenary. He is doing all he can to avoid the Armada and his family, for fear he may end up back where he started.
Likes:
Shiny objects, cookies, soccer, money, treasure, things that go boom.
Dislikes:
Boredom, authority, his own parents (probably for sending him off), anything/one that gets in his way, people who pry into another's business (but especially his own). Also, he's paranoid about outer space aliens, real or imagined. Deeply distrusts other birds.
Appearance:
A green bird with a yellow beak, blue eyes, and two streaming tailfeathers, as well as a tuft of feathers on his head. He wears a red hoodie and jeans with black boots and black fingerless gloves. The hoodie strings end in little silver skulls.
Other Info:
Bean is fluent in sign language and will sometimes use it to discuss things with Bark when talking is a bad idea.
He suffers echoes of guilt for Bark having been injured during their daring escape from the training facility.
