Name: Osuitak Sausimayok
Nicknames:
“Bark”. Given to him by his close friend Bean, this name has nothing to do with any sort of sound he makes and is instead tied to Bean deciding the shade of Bark’s fur reminded him of almond bark.
Species:
Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)
Gender:
Male
Age:
25
Alignment:
Neutral
Height:
8’0”. Like all polar bears, Bark is absolutely massive.
Residence:
Nomadic
World of Origin:
Gaia
Occupation:
Mercenary
Personality:
Best likened to a glacier, Bark is calm, silent, and slow to act - preferring to weigh each option in its entirety and proceed only once he has a clear idea of the best path. Though willing to work for the highest bidder as a matter of practicality, Bark's first loyalty will always be to Bean; outside of that he does have a sense of honor beyond his mercenary work, being quite willing to release a target who's done him a good turn and conscientious about repaying any perceived debt. Though he generally prefers to keep to himself and avoid social interaction, Bark has a firm sense of devotion to those he trusts. He's also extremely patient with friend and foe alike, readily willing to work with a previous enemy if necessary and bearing any accompanying nonsense with deep-seated stoicism. Even frustrated, Bark tends to keep his ire to himself; an angry Bark is a rare sight, and his slow-burning temper also cools swiftly.
Strengths:
Physical: A physical powerhouse, Bark is capable of lifting several times his own weight. He’s a skilled boxer, able to hold his own against a variety of foes, and amazingly tough due to both his bulk and his thick pelt. As a polar bear Bark is extremely cold resistant, able to shrug off temperatures of 50 below zero or less, and has an incredible sense of smell used for navigation and tracking.
Mental: Bark is astonishingly patient - little can break his stoic air, and little can turn him from a path he's decided on. He's very adaptable, easily able to go with any situation, and in combat can adapt fluidly to any changes in strategy.
Weaknesses:
Physical: An old injury has damaged Bark’s vocal cords; while he can speak, he cannot manage above a hoarse whisper and it causes him discomfort. He also does not do well in warm weather, finding anything above sixty uncomfortable at best, and overheats quickly. His size and coloring make stealth a non-option in most circumstances (even if Bean isn’t with him).
Mental: For all the good Bark's stoic personality can do him, it also leaves him a bit slow to act while he tries to assess the situation - and once he does make a decision, stubborness can keep him on the path far longer than practical. He also tends toward the untrusting, with a special dislike for bird thropes aside from Bean, and his mistrustful nature makes him slow to make real alliances or ask for needed aid.
Emerald Abilities:
N/A
History:
Born in a remote fishing village on North Island’ Aurora Icefield, Bark spent his childhood watching his hometown in decline. With his days divided between working the fishing nets and snowboarding through the surrounding drifts, he had plenty of time to think of something bigger - and so, as soon as he was able, Bark took a few belongings and headed south.
After striking out on his own, Bark tried to make ends meet selling his carvings - but with income from that few and far between he fell into odd jobs and eventually mercenary work, selling his brute strength and imposing presence to whoever was willing to pay. Not what he envisioned… but better than languishing in a dying village. Bouncing from job to job, Bark began to build a reputation among mercenaries and those who hired them, ultimately hired on for grunt work in a fringe operation of the Battle Bird Armada - which was where he met Benjamin Bean.
Despite their differences - a stoic, taciturn mammal and a high-spirited, chattery bird - Bark and Bean quickly became close friends and confidants, bonding even through the Armada’s teachings and Bark’s growing inclination to keep to himself. The two even discussed travelling together to see the world outside the Armada and Bark’s own narrow experiences… right until Bean’s odd talents with explosives led to him being locked away for ‘special training’.
Months passed with no word from Bean; increasingly worried about his friend’s silence, Bark began attempting to track the woodpecker down; he had little luck for some time, but finally, a nearby series of explosions attracted Bark’s attention. His instincts were right: it was Bean, out to escape his training. Bark immediately went to his aid, and the two escaped… though in the confusion, Bark was left with serious injuries, costing him his voice for the most part.
Once recovered, Bark went back to mercenary work - this time with Bean at his side. The two are inseparable, and some of the best hired guns Gaia has to offer… though deep down, Bark’s real concern is making sure the Armada never finds Bean, and sometimes he finds himself wondering if they could just disappear altogether and start again, far away from any threats.
They’ll need one big job to get the funds to pull that off, though….
Likes:
Carving and whittling, ice cream, iced chocolate, snow, snowboarding
Dislikes:
Hot food and beverages, summer, bird thropes aside from Bean, rain, nosy people
Appearance:
A large, burly polar bear with pale cream-yellow fur and a triangular white marking on his chest. The fur on Bark's head grows long enough to be pulled into a ponytail with shorter tufts framing his face, and his muzzle is peach. Bark typically wears a green scarf, orange and red togue, and brown, red, and yellow boots and boxing gloves.
Other Info:
When he strains himself enough to speak, Bark has a faint Inupiaq accent.
Bark is fluent in sign language, though he rarely takes his gloves off to use it properly; they have a sort of shorthand language that works well enough for basic communication.
His scarf, hat, and gloves have pouckes for cooling packs; generally Bark will change those every twelve hours. He also carries a carving knife.
Name Origin: ‘Osuitok’ is from Inuit sculptor Osuitok Ipeelee; ‘Sausimayok’ meaning “covered in snow”.
